Paisajes De Los Andes Carménère 2015

Wandering around my local wine shop I came across this baby. Paisajes De Los Andes Carménère 2015. While doing my Southern Hemisphere tour I decided to give it a try. The two winemakers Gabriel Edwards and Laurent Godeau met each other at Nantes University in France. They were both passionate about wine and after working for several of the better wine groups decided to make their own. They decided that Chile would be the place for them to make wines. There is very little information about the operation other than the wine is produced at Bodega Paisajes De Los Andes. I located an importer here in Florida and ABC Fine Wines & Spirits carries it.
The Carménère grape was originally planted in the Medoc region of France where it was used to produce deep red wines. It as also used for blending purposes. Carménère is a member of the Cabernet family. The name comes from the French word for crimson or carmin. It is also known as Grande Vidure a historic Bordeaux synonym. It was one of the six original red grapes of Bordeaux. Due to EU regulations, Chilean wine cannot be imported under that name so Carménère is what is used.

The growing region

The Colchagua Valley is just 130 km (81 mi) south of the Chilean capital of Santiago.  Colchagua Valley is bordered on the north by the Province of Cachapoal, on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the east by the Andes Mountains, and on the south by the Province of Curicó. The Colchagua Valley was carved out naturally by the Tinguiririca River, which flows down from the Andes Mountains from its headwaters at the base of the 4300-meter (14,100 ft) Tinguiririca Volcano.
The area has a semi-arid Mediterranean climate with a winter only rainfall. In the growing season, they have warm dry days. The Andes mountains make for cool evening breezes. The warm dry sunny days allow for the slow ripening of the fruit.

About the wine

Cold pre-fermented maceration is used for 5 days before malolactic fermentation. 25% of the wine matures for 3 months in American oak barrels before blending.

What I found

This wine has a brilliant burgundy color. The nose is very mild with hints of floral maybe roses. It also has an earthy woody aroma.
The taste is that of black fruit with a musky taste.  The oak is present but very soft. The tannins are very mild and has a long persistent finish. I think that this wine is good but not great. Maybe it is the musky taste that bothers me. After being open for 2 hours the mustiness dissipated and became pleasant. I feel that it would go well with spicy foods and possibly at a BBQ. I rate this as an 82 out of 100. If anyone else has found this wine I would love to hear what you think. Alcohol content 13.5
Cheers!!
